This month we are doing one of Jonathan Gold’s 101 favorite restaurants. Guisado’s began in 2010 in Boyle Heights serving Mexican food not of the fast food, taqueria, mom and pop restaurant, or sit down place type, but rather true home style cooking. The corn tortillas are handmade and the food tastes very fresh, and the food still comes at a very modest price. They have eight locations around Greater L.A. and the Hermosa Beach location is the first in the South Bay, opening just last December. The menu is very simple, but it includes some unique items. In addition to the tacos and tamales, they have tinga, their signature braised stew. Their aguachile is also very good. Basically, this is ceviche without the onions and tomatoes, but be warned – it can be very spicy.
